Premenstrual tension (PMT)

A teenage girl sitting on a bench looking fed up

Nine out of ten girls notice some mood and body changes for a day or two before the start of their period.

These include:

  • Tender breasts
  • Tiredness
  • Grumpiness
  • More acne than usual
  • Feeling bloated
  • Feeling fed up

These premenstrual tension feelings normally go once your period actually starts (which is why it is called 'pre' mentrual tension!).

Some girls find doing some exercise helps whilst other find that they need to drink or eat sugary things or curl up with a hot water bottle. If the cramps as are very bad then parecetamol pain relievers help or other stronger tablets or medicines such as ibuprofen will take the pains away.

If the PMT is very bad it is worth talking to your doctor about the best way to treat it so that you feel better each month. Just knowing that it is normal and there's nothing to worry about often helps.

Different people find different things help them deal with PMT
