PCOS stands for
polycystic ovarian syndrome. It occurs in up to one in ten girls. Polycystic ovarian syndrome occurs when there is an imbalance of hormones that can make girls a bit 'hairy' or spotty. Some girls with PCOS (but not all) may be overweight. Many girls with PCOS have irregular periods or may go a long time without having a period. There are usually little cysts on the girl's ovaries. PCOS can be treated - the best way of getting on top of it is to eat healthily and do more exercise. The oral contraceptive pill or other medications can help too.
