A hangover is how you feel after you have drunk too much alcohol. You have a headache, you cannot stand up because everything spins around you, you feel sick as shit, become extra sensitive to bright lights and to noise, feel very thirsty and the inside of your mouth tends to feel like it is made of sand paper that has been used to wipe a cows bottom, and you just want to die.
What causes them?
Drinking too much alcohol can cause a whole lot of changes to occur in your body, however about a quarter of people who drink too much alcohol do not get a hangover but in general what seems to happen is that the alcohol makes you pee more, so that you become short of water in your body (dehydration). Alcohol also lowers your blood sugar which makes you feel awful, and further when your liver breaks the alcohol you have drunk down – it produces a whole lot of things that make you feel even worse! Along with this – your brain swells against your skull which is what probably gives you the headache.
How long does a hangover last and how bad does it get?
This depends on – what you drink (beer appears less like to cause hangovers than wine or liquours),how much you drink, what kind of state you were in before you started to drink, how sensitive you are to alcohol etc. etc. However a hangover can last for several days – so be warned. What is strange is that in spite of all these things you get from drinking too much alcohol, people will go on getting drunk again and again and go on feeling totally terrible as a result!
The present official medical opinion is ‘No compelling evidence exists to suggest that any conventional or complementary intervention is effective for preventing or treating alcohol hangover. The most effective way to avoid the symptoms of alcohol induced hangover is to avoid drinking’. It does not stop people from trying everything under the sun though!
