A green cannabis leaf, some handcuffs and a judges gavel on a desk
Remember: this drug is illegal!

If you are aged between 10 and 17 years of age and you are found by the police with even a small amount of the drug, the police will always take action. This puts it in the same class as 'speed' and means that the maximum penalty for possession is now 5 years in prison and an unlimited fine. They will take the drug away from you.

  • they may reprimand you if it is the first time that you are caught with cannabis and they are likely to tell your parents.
  • if it is the second time you have been caught the police may give you a final warning and/or refer you to the Youth Offending Team
  • arrest you if it is the third time. This may lead to a conviction and a criminal record

If you are aged 18 or over, the police will always consider arresting you. The will take the drug away from you and will:

  • give you a cannabis warning if it is the first time
  • give you a Penalty Notice for disorder if it is the second time with an 'on the spot' fine of £80
  • arrest you if it is the third or more time. This may result in you getting a convicand a criminal record.
